This month we’re focusing on Back to School (Work/Life Balance) As children transition from the flexibility of summer break back to the structure of the school year, parents often experience a major shift in routines, schedules, and responsibilities. The good news is that research shows that creating predictable family routines can reduce stress, improve children's adjustment to school, and help parents feel more balanced and in control. Here are a few tips for transitioning to your new work/life balance
"Balance is not something you find; it's something you create." – Jana Kingsford
- Start routines early - Begin adjusting bedtimes, wake-up times, and meal schedules 1 to 2 weeks before school starts. Small changes are easier for everyone to adapt to.
- Review family calendars together - Identify work commitments, school activities, sports, and appointments so there are fewer surprises during busy weeks.
- Prioritize the essentials - Focus on sleep, nutrition, exercise, and family connection before adding extra activities. Adequate sleep supports better mood, decision-making, and productivity.
- Create a realistic morning and evening routine - Consistency reduces decision fatigue and helps both parents and children manage stress.
- Build in transition time - Avoid overscheduling. Even 15 to 30 minutes of downtime after work or school can help family members decompress.
- Protect personal wellness time - Schedule exercise, quiet time, hobbies, or social connection just as intentionally as work meetings and school events.
- Give yourself grace - The first few weeks of school are often an adjustment period. Progress is more important than perfection.
