Week 5 - Strength

It's the final week, congratulations!!! Use this last week to push yourself and finish strong. Here's some info about strength.

Why is strength training important?
Lean muscle mass tends to have a "use it or lose it" relationship with age. As you age you naturally lose lean muscle mass, so it is important to train to prevent this loss. By maintaining (or increasing) lean muscle mass, you'll burn more calories at rest and preserve bone density. Focusing on training specific muscles can help with muscle imbalances, increase mobility, and help you to prevent injuries.

How to improve strength?
Since there are so many ways to improve your strength, you should try many different techniques to find what is most enjoyable and effective for you. At the core of strength training, progressively working your muscles harder will train them to become stronger to keep up with higher weight loads. Here are some modes of training to consider: bodyweight, resistance bands, cable weight machines, or free weights.

It is also very important to remember to allow your muscles to recover. If you're just starting out, allow yourself a few days between strength workouts to rest and focus on mobility. As you get stronger, strength workouts can be closer to 1-2 days apart.
